How to convert salary to hourly

Hourly wage = annual salary รท (hours per week ร— weeks worked per year). With a standard 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks, that's 2,080 hours a year โ€” so a $60,000 salary works out to $60,000 รท 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. Going the other way, multiply an hourly wage by 2,080 to get a full-time salary: $25/hour ร— 2,080 = $52,000.

Quick rule of thumb

For full-time work, you can roughly double an hourly wage and add three zeros to estimate the salary ($20/hour โ‰ˆ $40,000), or halve a salary and drop three zeros to estimate the hourly rate ($70,000 โ‰ˆ $35/hour). The exact figures are slightly higher because there are 2,080 hours in a work year, not 2,000.

Paid vs. unpaid time off

Salaried employees are typically paid for all 52 weeks, including vacation and holidays. If you're hourly and don't get paid time off, lower the weeks-worked field (for example, 50 weeks for two unpaid weeks) to see your true annual income. Biweekly and semi-monthly figures are always annual pay divided by 26 and 24 paychecks respectively. To see what lands in your bank account after taxes, use the paycheck calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours per year. Part-time schedules or unpaid weeks off reduce that number.

Is biweekly the same as semi-monthly?

No. Biweekly pay comes every two weeks (26 paychecks a year), while semi-monthly pay comes twice a month (24 paychecks a year), so each semi-monthly check is a bit larger.

What is $50,000 a year hourly?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour.

Does this include taxes?

No โ€” these are gross (pre-tax) figures. Use our paycheck calculator to estimate take-home pay after federal, state, and payroll taxes.
